California State University Channel Islands School of Education Master of Arts in Education Program Review: Self-Study

The Master of Arts in Education is housed in the School of Education and is comprised of four specializations: Educational Leadership P-12; Educational Leadership Higher Education; Disability Studies; and Curriculum & Instruction. Included in the P-12 Specialization is coursework that meets the Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirements for a Preliminary Administrative Services Credential (PASC).In Fall 2016 the School of Education implemented an organizational structure that placed a tenured chair directly over the MA in Education and CODEL, the Collaborative On-line Doctorate in Educational Leadership. A full-time lecturer faculty coordinator had previously held this oversight role. In addition to the shift in leadership, an anticipated Executive Order (EO) from the CSU Chancellor's Office and the impending implementation of new standards required for the PASC led faculty to split the MA in Education into two distinct degrees with two emphases each. The MA in Education remains with two emphases: Disability Studies and Curriculum & Instruction. The MA in Educational Leadership has two emphases—P-12 and Higher Education. The Administrative Services Credential is housed with the P12 Leadership emphasis. The two new degrees that will begin in Fall 2017 will be compliant with the EO 1071 that demands a minimum 51% common core of classes in the degree program. This self-study examines the MA in Education from the last self-study in 2010 to spring 2017.
