- SUBJECT BIO</b> - Carol Niedo is a Creek woman from a small town in Oklahoma. Her grandfather was the first ordained Indian minister in Oklahoma and she recalls going to church and cleaning the church grounds. One of twelve children, she was orphaned when she was eight years old. Initially, she went to live with an older sister and attended public school, but then went to a mainly Comanche Indian boarding school. Her boarding school experience was less cruel and traumatic than it was for so many others, perhaps because she several of her siblings were there, too, and they were not separated from each other. She met her Comanche husband at the boarding school and married after she graduated. They moved to California to enable him to enter a training program. After he became disabled, she entered college. At the time of the interview, she had been married nineteen years and had six children. She was very involved with their school. She also did Indian art work, especially beadwork, which her father-in-law had taught her. She does not know much about her grandparents or parents because they died by the time she was eight years old. She had eleven siblings and one of her older sisters took care of her and the four youngest and another sister took care of the older ones. She and her younger siblings went to a boarding school and were separated from their older siblings. Niedo's grandfather was the first ordained Indian minister in Oklahoma; most of her uncles and brothers are preachers. She does not remember much about her mother except taking walks with her. Niedo was four when her father died. Her mother died of cancer, she believes as a result of retaining afterbirth. Some of Niedo's siblings were born at home and some at the hospital. (9:03-11:52)... Niedo went to live with her older sister and attended public school, and then went to the boarding school. At the public school, she did not feel different because she was Indian. The boarding school was all Indian and it was a closer environment because her siblings were there and she lived there with them. (11:52-16:45)... The curriculum at the boarding school included history, math, english, science, and general education. The boys and girls took the same classes and took the same subjects. When Niedo lived with her brothers, they all did the same chores and were treated the same although in the home the men did not cook or clean. Both Niedo's sister and her husband worked and he would cook if her sister had to work. (16:45-20:17)... When Niedo's parents died, she first went to live with her older sister. She made her own toys and games and recalls making paper dolls and clothes to dress them. It did not feel to her like the family was poor. She cannot remember asking for toys; but remembers getting a doll once a year for Christmas. It seemed that all of the neighbor children had the same toys. (20:17-20:32)... Niedo has six children and has been married for nineteen years. (20:32-25:21)... Niedo lived in a town with the Indians of all the same tribe, although the town was mixed. She went to the Indian churches with her aunt. She recalls that on Saturdays she would clean the church grounds and visit with all of the people from outlying towns. Sunday was service and Sunday school and another service in the evening. There were camp houses on the church grounds for people from other areas to stay. (25:21-30:21)... The boarding school that Niedo attended was Comanche. She met her husband, who is Comanche, there and they married after she graduated. They had children right away. She never thought about going to college because she thought her place was in the home. She wanted to wait for her children to grow up before she got out of the home. They moved to California for her husband to get job training as a mechanic. At the time of the interview, she was taking her first college classes. Her husband was in a car accident and became disabled. He stays at home to care for the children when they get home from school and Niedo is taking on the working role. She enrolled in school and she enjoys learning; she is majoring in art and she wants to become an art instructor. She teaches art at her children's school and discovered her interest in art through that experience. She primarily does bead work and Indian art. Niedo's father-in-law taught her how to do beadwork. <b>End of tape.
